His subjects often revolve around sexuality (without ever falling into voyeurism) and are for the most part very original. Whether THE PORNOGRAPHER, WAR, THE APOLLONIDE or even SAINT LAURENT , all these films have original subjects, sophisticated narratives and involve either directly or indirectly the sexuality of the characters.
For his eighth film, ZOMBI CHILD, Bertrand Bonello once again tackles a different subject, further proving his eclecticism, and tackles myth of the zombie, very much in vogue since the Movies joy series The Walking Dead. Of course, we had to expect him to deal with the subject off the beaten track by all recent films and series.
To do this, he decided to go back to the origins of the myth, voodoo, and to mix these origins with modern times. It thus pays a vibrant tribute to the first zombie films (before the first Romero) like WHITE ZOMBIE (1932) by Victor Halperin or VAUDOU by Tourneur in 1943, but also multiplies the themes around the subject.
So, rather than dwelling on the only theme of the Zombie he develops in Haiti in the 60s, Bonello has the intelligence to use the subject to tell us a story of modernism in a college of young girls.
But not just any college for young girls, a college created in 1804 only for young girls whose parents were decorated by the French government (Legion of Honor, Merit, etc.), a college where the notion of sorority is strong , a college with traditions, and therefore with a certain fantastic and ethnographic potential.
And again, by manipulating these two space-times, the director-scriptwriter walks us through his tale which at times takes on the air at PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK, playing on the mystery of his young adolescent girls seeking love, to speak to us freedom, desire, mystique without ever being redundant. Not content to use the 60s in Haiti and then our present in France, Bertrand Bonello gradually brings contemporary Haiti and that of 1980 into the story to better weave an ethnographic and historical canvas through space and time, to make the spectator understand all the fantastic that mixes with reality over the course of history.
Presented at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes this year, ZOMBI CHILD is a jewel touching the fantastic, skillfully staged and scripted, with a beginner cast but perfectly in tone and with a soundtrack concocted by Bonello mixing tribal music and Damso with a lot elegance. A complete film for an audience that likes to tackle different themes in cinema, not to be missed whether you like genre cinema or not!
